Why Should I Believe in God?

Belief in God is a fundamental aspect of human existence. It serves as the foundation for understanding and connecting with our Creator. Without believing in God, it is impossible to please Him or even approach Him (Hebrews 11:6). While some may reject the idea of God, there is abundant evidence of His existence that surrounds us (Romans 1:18–23). Disbelief in God is ultimately foolish (Psalm 14:1).

The Choice Between Human Reason and God’s Revelation

In life, we are faced with two choices. The first option is to rely on our limited human reason. This approach has given rise to various philosophies, religions, cults, and worldviews. However, human reason is not lasting because humans themselves are not everlasting beings (1 Corinthians 1:20). Our understanding is constrained by finite knowledge, and we are not as wise as we often think we are.

Furthermore, relying solely on human reason results in a life confined within the limitations of time. We are born, grow, make an impact, and eventually die. It is a narrow perspective that ends with ourselves. This choice leaves us lacking and unfulfilled.

The second choice is to accept God’s revelation as presented in the Bible. It involves acknowledging that our understanding is limited and entrusting ourselves to God’s wisdom (Proverbs 3:5). Believing in the God of the Bible does not negate the use of reason; rather, it allows God to open our eyes, enlighten our understanding, and grant us wisdom (Psalm 119:18; Ephesians 1:18; Proverbs 8).

The Evidence for God’s Existence

Belief in God is bolstered by the evidence readily available in creation itself (Psalm 19:1–4). Every aspect of the natural world silently testifies to the reality of a Creator. Additionally, the Bible, God’s book, establishes its own validity and historical accuracy. For example, consider the prophecy in Micah 5:2 regarding Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. Micah made this prophecy around 700 BC, and centuries later, Jesus was born exactly as predicted (Luke 2:1–20; Matthew 2:1–12).

Peter Stoner’s work on probability further supports the reliability of the Bible through prophecy. By examining eight prophecies about Christ, Stoner demonstrated that the chance of any individual fulfilling all eight prophecies is incredibly slim—1 in 10 to the power of 17. This probability calculation only considers eight prophecies, yet Jesus fulfilled many more. Such accuracy and reliability attest to the truthfulness of the Bible.

Understanding God’s Nature

As we read the Bible, we discover various attributes of God. He is eternal, holy, personal, gracious, and loving. Through the Incarnation of His Son, Jesus Christ, God has broken open the constraints of time. God’s loving action does not limit or hinder human reason; instead, it provides enlightenment so that we can comprehend our need for forgiveness and eternal life through Christ.

Why This Matters

Believing in God is not an arbitrary choice but one that has significant implications for our lives. It affects our worldview, morality, purpose, and ultimate destiny. Embracing belief in God allows us to experience true fulfillment and spiritual growth. It opens doors to understanding the world and our place in it within the framework of God’s wisdom and love.
